There has been some interesting research released last week indicating that the Green IT Services market is likely to reach $5 billion by 2015.  The report said the growth "...in the market will be primarily driven by factors, such as, greater focus on data center optimization, widespread adoption of Green IT initiatives beyond data centers, and development of new green management software technologies, among others."

And said the key players in this market (to the suprise of no-one) are: "...Accenture PLC, BT Global Services, Deloitte, Global Green Consulting Group, Inc., GreenIT, HCL Technologies, Ltd., Hewlett-Packard Company, HP Enterprise Services, International Business Machines Corporation, SustainableIT, Tata Consultancy Services, Computer Sciences Corporation, Dell, Inc., Getronics NV, Intel Corporation, Oracle, and Wipro Systems and Technology Division."

Tom Worthington, Senior Lecturer at School of Computer Science, ANU will be talking on "Innovating to lower costs and carbon emissions with ICT" at the Innovation ACT Seminar , 6pm, 3 June 2009 at the Finkel Lecture Theatre, John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU campus, Canberra (Map). For catering purposes please RSVP to InnovationACT@gmail.com. This is a free event sponsored by the Australian National University and the University of Canberra:

Innovation ACT promotes the learning and understanding necessary for the development and commercialisation of a viable product. One area entrepreneurs can seek to commercialise are socially and environmentally sustainable business practices. An example of this are new methods, ideas and products which can reduce carbon emissions by the use of computers and telecommunications (ICT).

The generally accepted figure is that ICT contributes 2% of carbon emissions, but could achieve a 15% reduction in overall emissions by 2020. The ANU will be teaching Masters students how to do this from July 2009, in the course COMP7310: Green ICT Strategies Students can do the course from anywhere in the world, via the web.

Green IT Process Integration

An organization may have thought well of effective Green IT initiatives, but efforts would go in vain if not acted on time.  We have a limited timeframe to implement any initiative so it is mandatory to take a conscious decision and prioritize green initiatives to get maximum green returns. The Green IT process facilitates this and ensures the relevant and quantifiable green metrics for the management dashboard.

The goal of Green IT process is to support the green objectives of an organization as defined. This is achieved with the perspective of how IT supports the relevant functional area. For example, if a green objective of an organization is to reduce the data center energy consumption then what server consolidation, virtualization and the power saving settings can IT provide to help reduce the energy use.

Let Green drive your services and solutions!

One of the quick-wins to energy conservation is to reduce workstation energy consumption during non-business hours as these occupy a fair share of total energy consumption. We could reduce energy consumption of workstations with power management settings, hibernation etc but this too consumes power enough not to be overlooked. Therefore if the Organizations' line of business allows, efforts should be made to bring in the culture of switching off PCs before leaving the office.

What we cannot measure, we cannot manage! IT Energy consumption should be reported as part of the periodic status reports; these artifacts can drive sustainability improvements efficiently which could be a revelation.

Organization focuses mainly on SLAs around Reliability, Performance and Security. The propensity to include SLAs around power efficiency would inflict ‘Green’ into an organization’s working.

Let Green drive our services and solutions!
